Directory backlinks: dofollow, badges, and what actually moves rankings

How directory links work, what dofollow really means, and why the badge on your site matters more than you think.

By the The AI Tools Index team

Every directory that lists your tool creates a link back to your site. Google reads those links as an authority signal — but not all links are equal, and the details matter.

Dofollow and nofollow, without the myths

A plain link ("dofollow") passes authority. A link with rel="nofollow" tells Google not to pass it. Many directories publish your link as nofollow by default and upgrade it to dofollow once you verify their badge on your site — it's a trade: you give them a link, they give you authority.

On The AI Tools Index, your listing links straight to your site, and verifying the badge is what takes your listing live.

Why the badge matters

The badge is not decoration: it's verifiable proof the listing is yours, and the mechanism directories use to detect (and re-check) the link exchange. Remove it, and most directories will eventually unpublish your listing.

  • Put it in your global footer so the verifier finds it on any page.
  • Never add rel="nofollow" to it — that voids the value of the exchange.
  • Pick whichever variant (light or dark) fits your site; the link is what counts.

The full strategy

Ten verified listings on real directories beat a hundred links from link farms. Choose directories with real traffic, fill every listing completely (logo, screenshots, long description), and keep the badges up. It's one afternoon of work that keeps paying for years.
