What an AI-native directory looks like: the Skillselion MCP
An AI-native directory is one an agent can query as data, not a website a human must browse. The Skillselion MCP shows the shape: a free Model Context Protocol server exposing a 59,343-skill catalog through four tools, so the index itself becomes something an agent resolves mid-task.

Directories were built for eyes: a grid, a search box, a category tree. An AI-native directory keeps all of that for humans and adds a second interface for agents. Skillselion's version is a Model Context Protocol server: one npx command connects Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor or Codex to the same catalog the website shows, 59,343 skills and 8,427 MCP servers as of the 28 July 2026 snapshot.
The four verbs of a machine-readable index
Per its public repository, the server exposes search (query the catalog by task or keyword, filtered by type), top (the live most-installed leaderboard), load (materialize the best-matching skill's real instructions and files into the session), and synthesize (merge the top five matches into one deduplicated, source-attributed playbook). Notice what that list is: the four things a human does on a directory website, restated as API verbs.
The interesting design choice is synthesize. A human browsing an index compares five tabs; an agent gets the consensus of the five top-ranked sources in one response, with every rule attributed to where it came from. That is a capability a browsable index simply cannot offer.
Why taxonomies still matter when agents do the reading
Machine consumers make curation more valuable, not less. An agent resolving one answer amplifies whatever ranking sits underneath, and this one is computed from installs reported by the skills.sh registry, with forks collapsed and placeholder entries excluded. Garbage taxonomy in, confidently wrong agent out; that is why the counting rules we keep writing about stop being pedantry the moment a machine consumes the count.
The index you are reading is on the same path
This index publishes machine surfaces too, llms.txt and an MCP endpoint among them, because the question is no longer whether agents will consume catalogs but which catalogs they consume. The honest-numbers discipline both sites share is what makes that consumption safe.
